Hamilton Transportation: Your Guide to Getting Around Hamilton

By Plane

John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport serves as a vital gateway, offering domestic flights and limited international options, alongside significant cargo operations. This airport provides convenient access to the Greater Toronto and Niagara regions, establishing itself as a growing travel hub in Southern Ontario.

By Bus

The Hamilton Street Railway (HSR) is the city’s public bus system, making it the primary mode of transportation for getting around Hamilton without the need for a car. The HSR connects major neighbourhoods, attractions, shopping centres, and institutions like McMaster University, as well as downtown hubs and waterfront areas. Additionally, it links with regional transit services such as GO Transit, facilitating easy travel across the broader Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.

By Commuter Train

GO Transit, encompassing both GO Train and GO Bus services, is the regional transportation network that connects Hamilton to the Greater Toronto Area and surrounding regions. It plays a crucial role for commuters and visitors traveling in and out of the city without a vehicle.

The GO Train service links Hamilton directly to Toronto via the Lakeshore West line, stopping at key stations including West Harbour GO and Hamilton GO Centre. These routes provide straightforward access to downtown Toronto, the Niagara Region, and other major transit hubs across Southern Ontario. Meanwhile, GO Buses extend additional connections throughout the region, covering routes that go beyond the train service hours or reach locations not directly served by trains.

Together, GO Transit offers a reliable and efficient means of travel between Hamilton and the broader region, solidifying its status as an essential part of the city’s transportation network for both daily commutes and tourism.

By Taxi

Getting around Hamilton is quick and easy with 24/7 taxi service across the city. Top local options include Hamilton Cab, one of the city’s largest and most reliable fleets, and Blue Line Taxi, known for wide coverage and easy booking.

By Uber

Getting around Hamilton is also very easy with Uber, which lets you book a ride instantly from your phone anytime, day or night. It’s widely available across the city and a convenient option for quick trips, airport runs, or getting between neighbourhoods without waiting for a taxi or worrying about parking.

By Your Own Car

Getting around Hamilton by your own car is straightforward, with most neighbourhoods and attractions offering a mix of street parking and public lots. Downtown Hamilton and popular areas like James Street North, the waterfront, and Locke Street have metered street parking, while nearby garages provide easy all-day options for longer stays. Outside the core, parking is generally more relaxed and often free on residential streets—just be sure to check posted signs for time limits and permit zones.

In Hamilton, street parking is paid using the Passport Parking app. You can download it on your phone, enter the zone number shown on nearby signs, and pay for your parking directly in the app. It also lets you extend your time remotely, so you don’t have to return to the meter.
